CREATING A POWERFUL MESSENGER

When you speak, you are a messenger. Whether you own the company or you are a sales staff rookie, a political candidate or a trial lawyer, a pediatrician or a teacher, every time you speak you are a messenger.

A good messenger needs to be heard.  You will not be heard if people don't want to listen. People are more likely to listen if they like you. So it's better to be liked than disliked.

The powerful messenger is likeable. We've heard people say, "It's not my job to be liked." It may not be written in your job description, but the fact is, every job is easier if the people you communicate with like you.

Wouldn't it be great if we were solely judged on the merits of our message? In reality, the person I'd rather have at my BBQ matters whether we are picking a president, attorney, or plumber.

According to a large UCLA study, the invitation to the BBQ is most likely based on how you use your face, voice, and body.

How you use your face, voice and body impacts whether people see you as aloof, cold, angry, sneaky, or elitist, (unlikable), or open, honest, genuine, personable or friendly (likeable).

You could be a saint, but if you have an uncaring face, voice, or
body, you can be seen as secretive, untrustworthy, and a liar.
We teach messenger development in a way that gets fast results.

ACTORS

We spend time with people we like. Name the best actress and the best actor. When I make this challenge in seminars, I get the same answers. For the women, it's always half Meryl Streep, & half 10 other actresses from Judy Dench to Annette Bening. For the men, I hear DeNiro, Hoffman, Pacino, McKellen, Nicholson, Denzel Washington, and Tom Hanks.

If they are the best, they should get paid the most right? Well, Tom Hanks is right up there, but the best paid are Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Jim Carrey, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Adam Sandler, Keanu Reeves, Will Smith, and for the women, Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz, Reese Witherspoon, Meg Ryan, and Nicole Kidman.

Reese Witherspoon, Meg Ryan, and Cameron Diaz, fine actresses, make about $15 million a movie. Meryl Streep makes $5 million dollars a movie. I'm sure Meryl Streep is a wonderful person. Is Reese Witherspoon really worth 3 times Meryl Streep? Yes, because we like her more.

Tom Cruise, often makes over $70 million a movie. DeNiro, Pacino, Hoffman, and McKellen have never made anything close. Fair? Yes. When people buy tickets, they are paying to spend time with actors they like.

PRESIDENTS

We vote for people we like. Do we elect the smartest candidate for president? I don't think so. Adlai Stevenson, noted for his intellectual demeanor, lost twice to Dwight Eisenhower. Eisenhower's campaign slogan? I Like Ike.

Ronald Reagan beat 2 intellectuals, Jimmy Carter and Walter Mondale, some people thought he was just an actor, but he was the likeable, Great Communicator.

Bill Clinton, another likeable, great communicator, had a 67% approval rating while being impeached by Congress. The Congressional approval rating dropped during the process. When we like someone, it helps.

Do you hire, vote, buy from, or spend time with people you don't like?

YOU CAN BE MORE LIKEABLE. WE WILL TEACH YOU HOW.
